CHRISTOPHER TUGWELL
Born in 1938 in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, Christopher Tugwell has enjoyed a long journey which now celebrates him as one of South Africa’s most well-known landscape artists. Working mainly in oil, Tugwell has created his own distinctive style that reflects the inspiration of the subtle and poetic moods of nature. Christopher Tugwell is recognised as one of South Africa’s foremost landscape artists, he has exhibited regularly in major centres.
His work, much sought-after by both local and overseas collectors, reflects the subtle, poetic moods of nature that interest him more than dramatic and highly colourful subjects. The delicate rendering of these moods has become a hallmark of his style.
Christopher Tugwell is a South African painter known for his poetic depictions of South African veldt landscapes. Tugwell often chooses viewpoints which have a distant horizon line, creating an all-encompassing landscape filled as much with sky as land. “The subtle and poetic moods of nature interest me more than the dramatic and highly colorful,” the artist has said, which is reflected in his Impressionistic style.
Born in 1938 in Durban, South Africa, he is largely self-taught with the exception of private lessons he received growing up. At the age of 20, the artist moved to Johannesburg to pursue his career as a painter, and soon after opened his own gallery in Pretoria.
Sadly Christopher Tugwell died on 16 January 2021.
