DANIEL NOVELA
Born in Louis Trichardt, South Africa, in 1964 to a Tsonga mother and a Mozambican father, Daniel Novela’s early life was marked by displacement and adversity. His family relocated to Mozambique in 1970, and the passing of his father in 1974 left them in dire poverty.
Despite these challenges, Daniel’s thirst for knowledge led him to seize the opportunities presented by Mozambique’s newly independent education system. He excelled in primary school, even with classes held under a tree due to a lack of facilities. However, financial constraints interrupted his secondary education for two years.
At 17, Daniel’s determination prevailed. He successfully petitioned the provincial education authorities for support, earning a place in a government boarding school. His academic brilliance shone through, and he was exempted from final exams due to his outstanding performance.
Unfortunately, his mother’s decision to return to South Africa due to the war in Mozambique cut short his studies at the School of Visual Arts in Maputo.
Back in South Africa, Daniel turned to his lifelong passion for art as a means of survival. His talent was recognized, and in 1998, he enrolled at the Vaal Triangle Technikon, where he flourished despite financial difficulties.
Daniel is currently pursuing a B.Tech Degree in Business Administration. He is married with two children and has been generously supported by Les and Sylvia Lategaan, who recognized his artistic potential and provided invaluable assistance, including art materials, exhibition opportunities, and even helping him build a home for his family.
Daniel’s art reflects his personal journey and the richness of his experiences. His powerful techniques and sensitive portrayals of subjects close to his heart have earned him recognition and participation in numerous exhibitions and community projects.
